New Pants, old tricks.
Oh My! I feel so great about being in September. I zenned into cleaning this morning after dropping Sam off at a friend's for a little while. We had a house full this weekend, culminating in a surprise visit from Paul's best friend and his girlfriend (who have just relocated from MI to Pullman, WA-- anybody have any suggestions for them?). This visit made me happy in so many ways, particularly knowing that we both have people in our lives who've known us for a really long time and still want to be our friends. It strikes me as rare-- especially in men.
So yes, this zenning into cleaning is good and very necessary. As was the few hours I spent puttering around my sewing room/spare bedroom last night. Paul played "talk like Big Bird and engage little plastic people" and I wrote emails, listened to music, and did a tiny bit of sewing. I pulled out all my cool weather fabric and set to making Sam some pants-- or what I'll call "ripping a page straight from Amy's book". I didn't mean to twin with Sadie but there you have it.
I found just enough dark brown wide wale corduroy left over from another project. The pockets are made from fabric ordered from Superbuzzy (you'll probably see a lot of it floating around as I painstakingly dole it out over lots of projects). I hemmed the legs with My New Favourite Thing, twill tape. Makes a nice cuff as I'm sure they'll be a little long on him. This is the first in what will hopefully be a long love affair with making pockets. I have avoided them for so long that I had forgotten why I left them out in the first place. They're easier than they look and there are so many great possibilities. Vive le Pocket!
I've been thinking about quality and about why I "make" rather than buy, and while there are the obvious reasons, I still struggle with the amount I consume rather than reuse or just plain "use up". So I'm going to try to be more mindful of that. As for the issue of quality, I want to gently push myself to make every project special in some way-- even if it's just figuring out pockets or cleaning up my seams, I want to learn how to do new things and perfect the old. Make it good and make it right.
