I'm breaking it down and giving you the power, People. The power to make this awesomeness according to your own dietary needs. Need a lot of fat? This will do it. Need something to entertain your lactose loving neighbors at your vegan table? Well, Hello there...

Make Your Own Super Good Black Forest Trifle.
Bake two chocolate cakes in 8 or 9 inch round pans. Let cool.
Make some chocolate pudding. 2-4 cups should do it
Whip up some whip cream. (Or tofu whip from silken tofu, sweetener and vanilla.)
Procure some cherry pie filling
Slice cakes in half horizontally. Layer as follows:
I repeated nearly three times (I ran out of pudding so the top didn't get anything). I've made this dessert vegan, wheat-free, lactose heavy, and most ridiculously-- entirely from scratch. This picture involved a Dr. Oetker cake mix, homemade pudding, canned cherry pie filling, and good old-fashioned heavy whip cream.
It's best made hours in advance (even the night before!) so that the pudding has time to soak into the cake a bit. Just save the last layer of whipped cream for serving. If you have a large pedestal trifle bowl, then the two cakes, two cans of pie filling, and the most amount of pudding will fill it right up. My bowl is slightly smaller so I end up taking the leftover components and mixing them up in a casserole to put in the fridge. The next it turns into some sort of beautiful pudding mousse-like business that is almost as good as the real thing.
