It was a blustery day yesterday. The sort of blustery that was sunny and pretty and dark and lovely all at the same time. Come hither Fall, we made it through summer with flying colours this year. So I wore my boots! and long socks! and my new skirt made from a paper bag of a dress I got at Target for 6 dollars and 24 cents. It was a very good day
The dress was some kind of sundress/tunic/HUGEST medium I've ever seen in my life. I cut the dress in half above the built-in pockets (yeah, pockets. awesome.) starting with the dress laid out flat. I cut from one side down towards the middle and then back up to the other side. I chickened out a waist band and opted for FOE instead. I thought about
Sally and
Martha the whole time.
In more brown-ish news, I'm slowly reconciling myself with my kitchen having given up on the orange and red
curtains (for now) and also on the crappy cafe curtains I had hanging previously. I got some dark brown drapes (to match the small bit of brown on the walls) and then wrestled with blocking out the view of our neighbor's backyard. They're nice enough (the neighbors) but it had to be done.
I used a bright white-on-white cotton print that I soaked in spray starch. I hung the fabric on the windows and re-sprayed the whole thing smoothing out the wrinkles, etc. It is nearly impossible to take a good picture of-- but I can assure you I no longer have a hankering for the beautiful but pricey window films burning up the intranet. For both the fabric and the starch I'm about 3 dollars out. I'll let you know how it holds up, but so far so good.
*edited to say-- a year and a half later and I'm happy to report that it worked great! I was thinking of switching up the fabric choices, but then decided to leave it alone for a bit. The edges curled slightly on one of the windows (they are up in a room with lots of temperature variance), but I just sprayed it with water the other day to straighten it out.
