I've been thinking about the Summer Uniform for '09. Paul is going to be home more, which means we're going to be out-and-about a little more, WHICH MEANS I need four good things I can put on without thinking and not be completely embarrassed. Plus, I sweat a lot, sooooo maybe I need five or six things. Anyway. There are also two big-ish weddings to attend and bikes that are going to be ridden. I pulled my stack of navy blue/striped tshirts and put them in the pile. Now I'm working on some sort of dress/skirt pile to round it out. I need my version of Sarah's work dress.
Chicken and I went to the Depot the other night to do some serious pattern browsing. I recommend pattern shopping in pairs-- it's funny (for one) and it's good to have someone else help you pick the pattern apart (for two). This pattern has a lot of good things going for it:
- pockets
- princess seams with darts (I need to move the darts down a smidge next time)
- nice neckline and good shoulder (strap) coverage
- flattering for all kinds of body types with the natural side waist line
- you could dress it way up with nicer fabric
I think there are nine or 10 tissue pieces, so it's not a beginner pattern. It's not hard if you see the directions through, but it took me a bit of staring the thing down before I put it all together. The only modification that I made was to ditch the back zipper and cinch in the back. I can pull it on and off over my head, which might mean that it's a tiny bit big (which works for everyday running around).
I'm not convinced that it's the one, so I'm going to try the raglan sleeve version next. Do you have a go-to dress pattern? The fabric came from the Bolt sale-- it's lightweight cotton ticking that was right around 5 dollars a yard. Sorry about the socks-- It was flipping cold today!! I may have to take that whole "duvet be damned" thing back. I cannot believe I'm saying it, but I'm ready to sweat. Gross but true.
